Be a sponsor of Proposal Introduction Silverfish Books, the Australian High Commission and MACLALS intend to organise the CITIGROUP KUALA LUMPUR INTERNATIONAL LITERARY FESTIVAL 2004. The Festival will run for three days and will comprise of talks, panel discussions, book launches and creative writing workshops. The Festival will also have an English literature/language teaching component with lectures and teaching workshops for English language/literature teachers from schools and colleges. In view of the Government's efforts in promoting and encouraging the use of English in schools, we believe that the launch of this Festival is very timely and will attract considerable media and public attention.
Literature & the Arts have generated a great deal more interest over the last 10 years. The establishment and popularity of bookshops such as Silverfish, Kinokuniya and MPH are testament to the fast expanding reading public in Malaysia. The occasional book tours by writers to Malaysia (most recently Bharati Mukherjee) have managed to generate both media and public interest. Literature/Language conferences are also very popular as indicated by those organised by MELTA and MICELT Organisation and Structure of the KL Literary Festival The organisers of the Literary Festival will be organized Silverfish Books with the support of the Australian High Commission Kuala Lumpur and Malaysian Association of Commonwealth Literature and Language (MACLALS). Other supporters include the Embassy of Ireland and the United States of America, and the High Commissions of Britain, India and Singapore. All in all, this will be a truly international event. The Board of Advisers includes Professor Lim Chee Seng of the English Department, University of Malaya, Professor Mohammed Quayum Universiti Putra Malaysia and Mr Kee Thuan Chye, published author and Associate Editor of a leading English newspaper in the country. The Kuala Lumpur Literary Festival will focus on the following components:
The Kuala Lumpur International Literary Festival will be a professionally run festival that will present the best writers from Malaysia and abroad. The Festival is intended to stimulate debate and new ideas and encourage both reading and creative writing in English among Malaysians. Through the support of the main High Commissions and Embassies here in Malaysia, we hope to secure the participation of at least a few leading international writers. We believe that by having a few high profile writers participating in the Festival, we will raise both media and public interest. The festival will also reflect a wide-range of writing from literature to popular fiction; from poetry to scriptwriting. The work of young emerging writers will be an important part of the festival; we hope that this coupled with the fact that we will be running creative writing workshops will attract young audiences and will in turn help create new and exciting Malaysian writing. We are confident that participants will not only be restricted to Malaysians but will also include Singaporeans, Australians and others within the region. The Festival will run for 3 days and will be held at a major hotel in the city centre. We hope to attract at least 500 - 1000 participants. Participants will be charged an entrance fee, which will cover all festival events (with the exception of private receptions) and meals. We hope to work with the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism Malaysia and other arts organisations so that other cultural activities (theatre/dance performances, film screenings) could be organised in the evenings during the festival duration.
Your company can come in as the title sponsor, a main sponsor or a co-sponsor We believe there are considerable sponsorship benefits in supporting this program. Through your sponsorship, you will be able to bring your company's corporate message to the attention of clearly defined audiences: The Government The Government has indicated through statements by the Prime Minister that promoting and encouraging the use of English Literature/Language in schools is an important part of the National Agenda. The Festival will also play an important role in encouraging Malaysians to inculcate the reading habit. Book launches and promotions will be an important part of the Festival and we hope to By supporting the Festival, you will be working in tandem with the Government in supporting the National Agenda. The Public With the participation of world renowned writers, the KL Literary Festival will not only make an impact on the literary and cultural life in Kuala Lumpur but will also help establish Kuala Lumpur as one of the cultural centres in this region. From the experience of cities such as Hong Kong and Adelaide which hosts writers festivals regularly, we can see that these calendar events draw large crowds of visitors to their cities which leads to increased tourism benefits. The different components under the Festival (the teaching of English language and creative writing workshops) will ensure a wider audience beyond the usual literary crowd; we envisage that participants will include teachers, students and young people. The Media The participation of world-renowned writers will ensure wide media interest. All the main newspapers in Malaysia have literary sections and we are confident that through interviews, book reviews and others, the Festival will have considerable media coverage.
