Changing Pathways

( Forest Degradation and the Batek of Pahang, Malaysia )

Author:

The Bateks are an indigenous ethnic minority of living in the lowland tropical forests of Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu states of Malaysia. These hunter-gatherers traditionally live in camps that are connected by a series of extensive "pathways" that cut across walking trails, rivers and logging roads, aided by a knowledge of the forest passed down from one generation to the next. The loss of forests to logging, land exploitation and other economic activities in the last few decades have affected not only the physical environment of the Bateks, but also their knowledge, perception, and politics. In this book, independent anthropologist Lye Tuck-Po examine their concerns, the cosmological basis for these concerns, the changing focus of the cosmology, and the stories and histories through which the Batek express their place in the world.
