Malaysian Youth in the Global World : Issues and Challenges

Malaysian Youth in the Global World: Issues and Challenges invites readers to examine the impact of globalization on our youth, looking at both the opportunities and problems that this changing world of innovation and technology presents. Among the most important issues commonly faced by youth today involve education, economics, finance, consumerism, government and politics, the need for a sense of belonging and identity, mass media, delinquency and crime, as well as the environment, parental control and misbehavior. Placing these issues within the context of globalization as experienced in Malaysia, individual chapters discuss how the role of youth as agents of change is impacted by globalization either, by advanced technology, open society as well as partly by 'westernization' vis-a-vis 'modernization'. While globalization may have connected us in new ways, it has also created more distance between youth and the older generation, as well as between and within their own age groups and within their own families and communities. The strength of this book lies in its multidisciplinary overview, with contributions made by a variety of scholars in the humanities and social sciences. Furthermore, empirical evidence provided in individual chapters, mostly as case studies, are most useful to scholars and practitioners alike. The contents of this book will surely enrich the fields within humanities and the social sciences, providing the discipline a major reference for scholars, students, researchers, those in NGOs and other policy and decision-makers.
