In 1998, Anwar Ibrahim, the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia was arrested and tried for Corruption and Sodomy. In 1999 he was convicted of corruption, and subsequently acquitted from sodomy in 2004. In 2008, he was again charged with sodomy and the trial ended in 2012 with an acquittal.

This book, written in the form of a commentary, is aimed at the ordinary English-speaking reader, written from the perspective of one of Anwar’s lawyers from his first two trials. It serves as a critical assessment of the Malaysian judicial system, the two decades of attacks on Anwar Ibrahim and the (mis)handling of his trials, seen by many quarters, as being orchestrated by the powers that be.

This book invites readers to ponder whether the trials of Anwar Ibrahim represented the problems of one man or portend the emasculation of such civilisational concepts as the rule of law, civil society and democracy that our young nation seeks to nurture.
