Damned Dams & Noxious Nukes

( Questioning Malaysia's Energy Policy )

Damned Dams & Noxious Nukes is the most incisive critique yet of Malaysia’s energy policy and its privatized utility, Tenaga Nasional. As if the Bakun dam was not foolish enough, the BN Government is planning to build more mega dams which are just as economically disastrous, socially disruptive and environmentally destructive. These projects will most certainly be paid for by Malaysian taxpayer through further tariff increases. At least two nuclear reactors are also being planned and the costs of these projects will be even more catastrophic.

This latest book by Dr Kua Kia Soong is the first to analyse the causes of the recurring crises in the Malaysian energy industry, with inside information provided by whistleblowers within TNB. The blackouts throughout peninsula Malaysia in 1992 and 1996 had been forewarned by the author in 1990 when, as a member of parliament, he had alluded to mismanagement, negligence and corruption in TNB and the energy ministry. The blackouts of the early nineties gave an opportunity for independent power producers to become privileged private electricity providers, who enjoyed subsidized profits and with whom TNB was forced to sign lop-sided agreements. This has seriously affected TNB’s profitability and increased electricity tariffs for consumers.
