When Silverfish New Writing 1 was published in at the end of 2001, it created a buzz like in the Malaysian English publishing scene like never before. The new millennium came not only with a pent up desire by local writers to express themselves in English, but also an increasing demand by Malaysian readers who wanted material they could identify with. When we called for entries at the end of September, we received over 250 submissions within the 30 days stipulated. Amir Muhammad, Bernice Chauly, Amri Rohayat and Irman Noor practically took over the project as they camped at Silverfish Books -- some even sleeping over -- over the next 30 days as stories were read, selected, edited, and proofed, before being readied for the printers. By mid-December, the book was on bookstore shelves. (There was even a printing error we had to correct by hand!) Silverfish New Writing 1 was followed by six more, two other anthologies, Nineteen: a collection of stories by women, an attempted 'theme' Collateral Damage and a 25 'best of' anthology.
