Tales from the Court and other stories is the first book by Matthew Thomas and the second in the Silverfish Books' Malaysian Literature in English.
As Mohamed M Keshavjee writes in his afterword: ... the author ... is a keen student of human foibles ... His
characters come vividly to life... the very essence of their
being and their cultures as they play their little games in life... (Free

WRITING: Do you have short stories? (1 Oct
2008)
MatthewThis
article, written by Shiv Das, appeared in The Malay Mail on the 23 of
September, 2008. It is reproduced here for those who missed it for some
reason or other.
This lawyer-cum-writer took his first short story to Silverfish Books
two years ago and it worked. Encouraged, he said he had more but it was
only two years later that he submitted them.
And even then, they were presented in hand-written form, much to the amusement (or dismay?) of the publisher.
They were fine, said publisher Raman Krishnan, but handwritten? Enter
Thomas’ wife who came to the rescue and had them typed properly,
an act that was duly and gratefully acknowledged at the launch of the
book, Tales from the Court and other stories earlier this month.
So point one. If you have something to publish, your best bet may be Silverfish. You could be glad just like Thomas.

NEWS: Selling fake iPhone with hilarious English (1 Oct
2008)
No
one thought it would take them very long, but this is quick, even by
their standards. Brian X. Chen writes in the Wired magazine that
ActFind (www.actfind.com) which describes itself as ‘The Best
China Marketplace For The Global Retailer’ has three models of
China Mobile phones (HiPhones) with prices ranging from USD114.50 to
USD 178.50. There are also two models of unlocked iPhones on the list
but out of stock. Interestingly, they are using photographs of the real
iPhones to sell the fakes!

NEWS: 50 greatest villains in literature (1 Oct
2008)
This is another ‘best of’ list this time drawn up by critics for The Telegraph.
As expected not everyone’s favourite villain is there, so many
will be disappointed and disagree. But for whatever it is worth, here
are some highlights.
1.Satan from Milton’s Paradise Lost tops the bill. That is almost predictable, almost a politically correct choice. In Jose Saramago’s The Gospel According to Jesus Christ,
God is the megalomanic villain who is willing to destroy millions to
become God of the world instead of just a few tribes of Jews, and uses
Jesus as a pawn. Good fun, but for the broadminded only. (But then,
this list appears to be for books originally written in English only.)

NEWS: Saving words from extinction (1 Oct
2008)
Times Online gave its readers
a chance to save their favourite word by voting for it at the Comment
Central weblog. (The voting is now closed and the results will be
announced shortly, but it is still fun to read about it.)
Apparently, ‘… dictionary compilers at Collins have
decided that the word list for the forthcoming edition of its largest
volume is embrangled with words so obscure that they are linguistic
recrement. Such words, they say, must be exuviated abstergently to make
room for modern additions that will act as a roborant for the
book.’ (You can read more of that on their website -- below)

The Malaysian Indians: History, Problems and Future by Muzafar Desmond Tate (RM 40.00)
The
Malaysian Indians comes at an important juncture in the history of this
significant minority group in Malaysia. Written several years before
the Hindraf rallies of 2007, this book is a much-needed introduction to
the Indians of Malaysia.
It is a balanced, scholarly yet highly readable account of the origins,
economic and political contributions, and continuing divisions and
problems faced by this diverse community.

EVENTS: Silverfish Books’ Writers' Forum (16 Sept
2008)
We have
received a request to change the date but after asking a few others, we
have decided to stick to the original. The next meeting of the
Silverfish Writers' Forum will be on Saturday, 11th of October 2008 at 2.30pm (since the first Saturday of the month will be taken up by Raya holidays).
As usual three people will read their works and present them for
criticism and comment. This free forum will be held on the first
Saturday of each month (as long as interest lasts) and is open to all.
But we wish to emphasise that this is a forum for short prose only --
short stories, travelogues, biographies, reportage, etc. This is not a
forum for poetry, plays, and movie or radio scripts. Please present
them at other suitable fora.
BTW, please bring along some kueh Raya. We will have a small writer's party.

This page was set
up
for
Silverfish Writing Programme members to put up their stories for
constructive criticism. But the internet being what it is, it has
attracted participants from all over (including overseas). We will,
however, for the moment confine the stories to those by Malaysians and
about Malaysians.

About us
Silverfish Books was
established in
1999 as an independant bookshop with a focus on literature, philosophy,
religion and Malaysiana - areas which are either neglected or not
addressed intelligently in the main stream bookstores. Silverfish Books
was established as a bookstore for people who like to read by people
who read. Customers and browsers come to Silverfish Books not only for
the individually selected titles (in a book boutique environment) but
also advice on reading. (Visiting mega bookstores can be intimidating
for the average reader with thousands of books but with nobody to help.
Customers normally end up buying something familiar and their reading -
and their outlook - never grows.) We stock many titles that cannot be
found in any of the mega stores - in fact, not even on Amazon.com! We
avoid 'management' and 'self-help' books (unless they are exceptionally
well written) because we think they are the 'Coca-Cola' of the book
world - useless but addictive. We believe in literature and philosophy,
not instant fixes.
Since 2000 Silverfish Books has also become Malaysia's leading
publisher of Postcolonial and World Literature. The first book,
published in the year 2000, was Silverfish New Writing 1 - an anthology
of short stories from Malaysia, Singapore and beyond. Since then the
Silverfish New Writing series has taken on a life of its own,
attracting postcolonial writers from all over the world.
Silverfish Books is a small press, and we are very proud of that. Every
single book is read thoroughly from cover to cover, and must pass our
stringent criteria before it is accepted. And every book is produced to
the highest standards (albeit in paperback form, due to cost) using
wood free paper.
